tazzie03 asked: There are customized linux OS with specialized functions out there for use. Example, for firewall we have smoothewall, IPCop and for router software we have Vyatta..
May i know if there is one such specialized software for WAN optimization?

A wireless access point is just another network node to Linux, it's the hardware that determines whether the signal goes on wires or wirelessly. Linux doesn't care. ("wlan0" is about as important to the functioning of your wireless connection as the name you give a document file is to how it prints.) There is network optimization software, but it doesn't care what the physical connection is.
Try WonderShaper
If you use VMware, then try the DD-WRT vmWare image
Try Release Candidate 6.2
Yes, There are many *nix/linux utilities for wan optimization, those tools implement QoS (Quality of Service), TOS (Type of Service) based on different schedulers and are pretty good for congested networks.
